Finding the Best Solution

Optimization is usually the final step in a process of analysis:

  1. Data mining finds all significant combinations of factors that may be potential solutions to a problem
  2. Constraint resolution reduces these to only the valid combinations
  3. Optimization evaluates these valid combinations, scoring them against a series of pre-defined criteria

Since the potential problem space has been massively reduced by the data mining and constraint resolution steps, quite complex scoring models can be used on the small number of cases remaining to be optimized.
